Women’s tennis wins 12th ACC title
The Tar Heels defeated Virgnia Sunday, earning their first conference championship since 2021.
For the first time since 2021, Carolina (22-3) won the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship after defeating the No. 4 Virginia Cavaliers (22-4), 4-1, Sunday in Cary, North Carolina.
Doubles action boasted five ranked tandems between the Tar Heels and Cavaliers.
On court two, the No. 43 ranked Tar Heel duo of Elizabeth Scotty and Anika Yarlagadda gave Carolina the advantage after they won 6-2. On court three, Abbey Forbes and Reilly Tran, the 27th ranked tandem, won 6-3 to clinch the doubles point for Carolina.
Despite clinching the doubles point, the 11th ranked pair of Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig defeated the No. 7 ranked Virginia pair, 6-2.
With the doubles point secured, Carolina’s focus shifted to three wins in singles play.
On court two, Elizabeth Scotty battled back to force a third set after dropping the first set 0-6. After dropping the first set, Scotty quickly evened the score at 1-1 with a 6-1 victory in the second set. Then, in the third set, Scotty left little doubt as she won 6-2 to give Carolina its second point.
Next, on court four, Reilly Tran won in straight sets (6-4, 6-2) to inch the Tar Heels closer to their fourth point.
Finally, on court six, first-year Tatum Evans fought to force a third set before she clinched the first ACC title for Carolina since 2021 with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory.
